Is it possible for an existing member to make a contribution without having to login first and have their account (linked to the e-mail address entered) credited?

yes, this is the default behavior. By default, contacts are matched using their email address. so an anon user can contribute and if they use the same email address as a existing contact the contribution is attached to the existing user
