Custom data tab in advanced search and contact edit - can we remove this layer?
March 14, 2010, 03:11:12 am
Hi there,

I really like the way that in advanced search, each custom data group can be collapsed and expanded.  Really makes a big difference for people using the product and I've had lots of positive feedback from clients who have upgraded (especially the ones who like to hoard data!)

From a reducing the amount of clicks and a user orientated POV, I was thinking (and have been for a while - even before this improvement) that we could elevate all custom data groups to the same level as the other groups (like custom data, etc) in the advanced search screen.

This would reduce the amount of clicks needed to get to a certain custom data group.

It would also mean that the average user isn't confronted with a 'custom data' tab in the advanced search screen, which, when you think about it isn't very user friendly.  The average user isn't interested in whether something is custom data or not (that's only interesting to the implementor or developer).  They may also be confused about what 'custom data' is.  A lot of the time, this 'custom data' is one of the most important things to the user, so hiding it under custom data doesn't seem right.

If it were at the top level, the average user wanting to search for specific 'service areas', 'project details' etc., would immediatley see that tab.

And we could apply the same principle to the contact edit screens.
