Implementing Multi-Registration Types of Individuals

I want to have the ability to allow users who are creating accounts through Drupal to have the ability to select what type of user they want to be then load the appropriate CiviCRM profiles on the sign-up form.

Is this possible out of the box or does one have to create additional modules to make this work?  Any ideas what CRM includes/hooks I would look for in the documentation to make this happen?

CiviCRM is a great platform!

You can potentially use CiviCRM profiles to create your drupal user account. You will need a form at the front end to redirect the user to one of several profiles

Thank you!  I'd like to contribute modules.  There's a lot of functionality that I plan to implement for clients.  I owe a copy of Pro Drupal Development.  Are there any examples of modules built specifically for Drupal and/or CiviCRM that I can use as a guide?  Any suggestions on how I can share what I learn with the community?
