Hello people,

I'm unsure as to the advantages and disadvantages of using Sendmail vs. SMTP for outbound mail in CiviCRM (from 3.1 onwards).

The size of the lists we'll be sending to are around 6,000 and the aims/concerns are

* we want to minimum chance of being seen as spam
* we don't want to place too much load on the webserver
* we want to take full advantage of bounce handling

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,9106.0.html gives me some clue and makes me think we can't do automatic bounce handling without SMTP - is that therefore a reason to go down the SMTP route?

Hi,

It doesn't have any impact on how spammy you look.

You can do automatic bounce handling with both smtp or sendmail.

IMO, the next version of civi will have a 3rd option: php mail() function. This is the one I'd suggest using.
