Allow profiles to behave like built-in search

Use case :

You create a profile with only the fields your coworkers need to manage your contacts (they are moderate computer literate). You add a link to their menu, so they can use this profile to add a contact and search existing contacts with only the relevant fields. Unfortunately, they cannot "act" on search results provided by this profile, as there is no "-more actions-" dropdown menu in this profile like in the core search results.

The profile should allow to act on contacts like built-in search does. A checkbox could be added to the profile configuration screen, like

  • Display the "action toolbar" for this profile's search results

Is this possible ? Sorry if it already on the todo, or worse, already possible ;-)

It sounds like what you really want is a custom advanced search screen... your coworker has access to all CiviCRM functionality, just searches for contacts via a custom form. Something analogous to search views, which allow you to define a profile that defines the search results, but you want the profile on the search side?

Are your coworkers restricted from viewing any part of the database? If so, that brings ACLs into the picture.

Yes, I'd like to customize the built-in search and advanced search forms. I wanted to use profiles, but it seems to be impossible at the moment. Do you have a suggestion on how to do this? I wanted to avoid modifying the template files and avoid hardcode html forms there.

Thank you in advance

Have you looked at creating a "customized" version of the Advanced Search templates as described here:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Customize+Built-in+and+Profile+Screens

... this would be more complex than a basic form template - but if you're just rearranging and/or eliminating some of the fields I think it might work.

Thanks for all the answers.

I think I will wait for 2.0, if work is done on this new feature "Allow Profile to override default templates (View, Search, Edit, Listings) specify a custom profile-specific templates."

(from http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviCRM+v2.0+(original+list) )

Else I'll dig in the custom templating option.

The feature you referenced is the already available "custom version of templates" functionality that's documented on the wiki page above.
