Configuring Google Apps SMTP with CiviCRM
March 23, 2010, 10:55:31 pm
Hi,

I've been having issues with configuring CiviCRM SMTP with Google Apps  : I've gone through all the relevant threads and still have not been successful ..

Below are the details setup with CiviCRM

From Address : hello@mydomain.com
To Address : hello@mydomain.com

SMTP : smtp.gmail.com   also tried ssl://smtp.gmail.com

Authentication : yes , Port : Tried both 465/587.

SMTP Username : hello@mydomain.com
password : ********

Domain name : www.mydomain.com

I have tried all the various combinations recommended in your forums but to no avail. The error code remains the same. IMAP is also enable on the email account being used.

Would appreciate it if anyone of you can share your recommendations or tested workarounds. Thanks

Dunkindobbs.
The Error received is

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sending test email. FROM: hello@mydomain.com TO: hello@mydomain.com.
Oops. Your SMTP settings are incorrect. No test mail has been sent.
An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
Failed to connect to smtp.gmail.com:465 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection refused (code: -1, response: )][/b]

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event.

i have gmail working for smtp on civi with the following:

ssl://smtp.gmail.com
port: 465
auth: yes
username: youremail@gmail.com
password: yourpassword

but i've got a straight up gmail address. not sure if it's different for google apps. also i see you have imap on; turn on pop too just in case that affects it.

I've had a similar issue when I tried to use Gmail's SMTP as well. It turned out that my server's MTA wasn't set up properly preventing all outgoing mail. You should try this on the shell command line:

echo "testing simple send" | mail mymail@gmail.com

If the above works then you should be fine, however if the above fails, you need to configure EXIM4 or some other MTA. I'm running a Debian based system and used this guide:

http://wiki.debian.org/GmailAndExim4

My settings for the CiviCRM SMTP are:

smtpServer  smtp.gmail.com
smtpPort     587
smtpAuth    yes

myemail@gmail.com
mypassword

Hope this helps,

Taiga

google puts a lot of restriction on how many messages you can send through their smtp interface. That's fine for tests, but won't work on prod if you have more than a handful contacts.

That worked for me almost year:
ssl://smtp.gmail.com
port: 465
auth: yes
username: youremail@gmail.com
password: yourpassword

And now it doesn't. I even used not gmail server.... just can't setup SMTP. I have all the time
[SMTP: Failed to connect socket: Connection refused (code: -1, response: )]

Are you on the latest civicrm ? At least with the IMAP, google changed something and it was fixed on civicrm.

You can try on demo.civicrm.org (don't forget to delete this configuration after your test).

Google has also been a bit more paranoid about the use of their smtp servers lately. If you connect too often, or they think you're infected with zeus, they may lock you out.

I have had a similar problem to Roland.  All settings were fine, and now, suddenly, not fine.  I just upgraded to 3.1.4, but whatever fix happened didn't fix anything.

Any suggestions, ideas?

In a nutshell: using gmail smtp servers are blocked at a few dozen/hundreds emails sent (the limit seems to vary based on the weather conditions in Mountain View, or something like that). It isn't, and won't be a solution to do mass mailing.

If you can't/don't want to manage the smtp servers yourself, I'd suggest to use civismtp or an external provider.
