Profiles v contact sub types

Do people have an opinion on which is a better way to split users of sites up? Especially to collect specialised data and to deliver different content based on type (member type, groups, tags, now there's sub contacts....)

Contact sub-types specifically supports creating different sets of custom fields for different types of contacts - so might be best fit (but a bit hard to tell w/o detailed description of what you're trying to do).
