Placing Individuals in Organizations

Our organization has many individual members from several different organizations.  Is it possible to place individuals into organizations or do I have to use groups for this purpose?

It depends what kind of connection do you need and what are you going to use it for.

Since you post it in Core CiviCRM forum board, I assume you don't use CiviMember. In such case probably the best way is to use Relationships. Please take a look here:

CivicSpace is currently working with a few people that need to manage organizations that have a number of associated individuals. Those individuals log into Drupal, but their permissions come from their organizational affiliation.

This has a number of components and complexities and if there are other groups with the same needs, we'd love to have you come on board to help fund the solution to the problem.

The basic issue here is it is generally difficult to change an organizational record based on the fact that an individual record is associated with it. It is also hard from Drupal registration, to create the various contact records and relationships in a configurable way (it takes custom coding).

Hi

I'm not sure if this is similar to what I want to do or not.  My organisation has several local organisations with volunteers.

I will probably need the volunteers to be able to add themselves to their organisation

I also want the ability of those volunteers to login to our extranet (which I now hope to do in Drupal) to depend on the membership status of their local organisation. ie. if the organisation has not paid subscription, the volunteers cannot use our site. 
I can think of other features that organisation membership would be the basis for granting access to.
At this stage I am afraid I cannot offer any money or developer time but I'm interested.

This is similar to some work we are doing for Kabissa.

Kabissa has member organizations. Individuals are associated with those member organizations. If an individual is associated with a member organization that is not in good standing, they should not have access to certain resources.

The situation sounds similar. There should be a wiki page up soon... a contribution of you use case and brain power would be appreciated.
