This is the first time I use CiviCRM. I am trying to set up a prototype for an event registration.

I want to capture some custom data from Volunteers when they register online for an event. I have created two custom field groups containing custom field data. I have a Profile (containing some CiviCRM standard fields) that I have already configured to the Event via 'online registration'.

My question is: How would the fields from the two custom field groups get displayed on the online registration form, is it via 'attaching' them to the Profile?

yes, on the profile administration page, you just add those new fields to the same profile that you already started with civicrm generic fields.

keep in mind with certain profiles you can't always combine information (you can't combine an organization-related profile and an individual-related profile on the same page).
