mail merge from civi to word
March 31, 2010, 09:18:02 am
This might be a dumb question - but is it possible to mail merge direct from Civi into Microsoft word? At the moment we are exporting addresses into excel. Is this the only way, or are we missing something?

hi,
There is no reason to involve Excel in the mail merge process. The file you export from CiviCRM is a "csv" file. When you do the mail merge in Word, it allows you to browse for the "source" file. Just browse to the csv export file and use it directly in the mail merge process.

I think though, that what you are asking is whether or not there is a way to have Civi "talk" directly to word, without having to do an export at all. If this was your question than I think the answer is that there is no direct comminication (that I know of) between Civi and MS Word.

hope this helps,
cynthia

In most cases the standard way of communicating with Word is using the COM interface. That will only work on Windows servers, and as CiviCRM will mainly run on Linux machines that will be a bit of a problem. You can use the .csv-format, or use the -rtf-format. Is the standard PDF-functionality not sufficient for your needs?
