I run this script nightly, it is updating the records correctly, but no email is going out for membership renewal reminders. When I do an activity report I can see the activity is there, but no email was ever sent.

It was the from email in the UpdateMembershipRecord.php.

You’ll need to either debug the script or (ideally, first) check your mailserver’s logs to see whether it gets the email (and does not deliver) or does not get the email from CiviCRM in the first place.
