OG and CiviEvent (oh noes not again!)
April 09, 2010, 10:52:56 am
Hello! Long time reader first time poster. I'm digging into my first CiviCRM installation and I have to say, it's pretty intimidating the first time. I'm running into some integration/workflow issues with my site and I'm wondering if anyone else has already addressed them. Searching the forum hasn't been very fruitful.

I have a site built largely on OG. Currently, the administrator role for any OG can create an event node, and that event's audience is restricted to their group's audience. The group then can view their version of the Calendar (using the calendar module) and see only their group's events. That's all working swimmingly.

Right now the Event node includes a URL link that allows the node creator to link to an Eventbrite page, and complete registration there. However, I'm looking at bringing event registration in-house via CiviEvent.

In a perfect world, I could keep the workflow as-is: create an event node via current setup, and it would export a CiviEvent. That doesn't appear possible (if it is, please please can someone point me the right direction?). My other choice is to move all event creation into CiviCRM, and do the well-established ical export trick.

What is not clear to me is how to associate a CiviEvent with a given group, thereby preserving the current "group calendar" functionality. When I create test CiviEvents in the system, I never see an opportunity to associate them with a group.

Surely I can't be the only one who needs/does this. What are some ideas?

Thanks!

Wouldnt it make more sense / be a lot easier if you start off with CiviEvent as a replacement for EventBrite

Over a period of time you can make the integration tighter and potentially automate event creation

group calendar functionality will stay the same as it currently is

One scenario I envisioned was that groups could create events via their normal Drupal node-creation process and those events would continue to appear on their Group Calendar -- but only for events that do not require any of the event-registration functionality provided by CiviCRM/Eventbrite/etc. Someone in the organization would have to decide, on a case-by-case basis, if an event warranted all the additional features (online registration, tracking registrations, etc.), at which point they would use CiviEvent to create the event.

I guess I don't like that solution because it is basically creating two workflows. OTOH I suppose the same could be said for the Eventbrite process as well -- if they're taking money for it they're setting up the event "twice" (once as a groupwide announcement, once as an Eventbrite process). Hm.

So as I understand it -- and my apologies for sounding ignorant, like I said this is my first deployment! -- setting up a CiviCRM event would completely replace the Eventbrite process, right? I guess I'll have to experiment and see if the event "page" that is created via CiviCRM has a URL I can drop into the current "register now" URL field I've created to link to their Eventbrite pages. And if I can explain that to my clients in a way they understand.

I think i will also just opt out of the iCal trick at that point, since they'll still be making group event nodes anyway.

Hallo!
I'm up to the same issue.
Did you solve this: "When I create test CiviEvents in the system, I never see an opportunity to associate them with a group" ???
If yes, would you mind giving me an idea how ?

Thank you in advance
Paolo

Hello.  I'm also in need of a solution for this.  I want to be able to create an event and say that the new event is associated with a particular group.  I want to be able to 1) use Views to filter events by group, 2) in a listing of events, print the group that it's associated with, and 3) be able to display a calendar of events for a particular group (I'm using CiviCRM OG Sync).  Can anyone point me in the right direction, whether it involves custom coding or some out-of-the-box thing that I'm overlooking?  I can't find any answers in the forums.

Thanks.

I've been trying to figure this out myself. How does one associate an event with a group using CiviEvent and Organic Groups?

there is no current integration (that i know of) between OG and CiviEvent

if you can contribute code that make it happens that would be awesome
