Importing contacts
April 12, 2010, 09:45:10 am
When importing new contacts into CiviCRM can you import along with them pledges, contributions, and the like or does all of that have to be hand entered after the initial import?

I also created a custom data group that allows multiple records, as such I needed to use the tab display style. I find that I cannot import data into those fields when importing contacts. If I set them up as inline I can then import data into them, is this correct? Unfortunately, setting them up as inline means that I can't use multiple records. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

After you have imported your Contacts you can then either use their External or INternal ID to import Contributions etc via IMport Contributions/Memberships to add this info to the record.

No, tabs or inline makes no difference whether they are visible during Import. If you have evidence to contrary and can replicate on Demo pls provide more info.

One the demo site when I am doing the mapping for an import I do not see the custom fields that are associated with TAB style custom data. The custom group titled 'Party Animals' is set up in tabs and it has 'Party Alarm' and 'Douchbags' (I did not choose them...) as custom fields. I do not see them in the mapping; however, I do see 'Most Important Issue' which is in the 'Constituent Information' custom group which is set up as INLINE.

Thanks for the info on the Donation imports, that was very helpful.

But if you look at the data fields here http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/custom/group&reset=1

you will see that Party Animals is set to only show for the Individual sub-type = parents so unless you select that sub-type from the dropdown on the import screen (where you choose Individuals or Organisations etc) then you won't be offered those fields.

OK, I do see that. On mine I have it set to 'Used For = Individual and Type = Any' as the attached screenshot shows. Should that not work?

Yes it should. And whether the fields are set to show as Inline or Tab should be immaterial.

Understood. For some reason it's not showing. I'll poke around then. At least now I know it should be there. Thanks.

I think that I see the issue. When check to option to
Quote
Does this Custom Data Group allow multiple records?
Then I loose the ability to import data into the custom field, whether tabs or inline. I set up a custom data group called 'Staffer' on the demo site to test this.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks

Unfortunately not. You will need to import that data via a custom script.
