Use of Price Sets with Recurring Transactions
April 12, 2010, 11:02:29 am
Our non-profit organization encourages people to sponsor children by making a $30 recurring monthly payment.
We would like to offer the ability to select the specific child that they want to sponsor AND have the ability to select more than one (so that they can make one monthly payment of $90 for three kids instead of 3 seperate $30 payments)

If i use contribution labels that inclue the names of each child, then only one child can be selected.  Contributioin do not allow for the selection of multiple options.  Also, contribution labels are text only and do not allow html (which is important because i want to diplay a phot of each child).

If I set up a price set that includes the names of each child, this works well for choosing multiple children but does NOT allow for payments to be recurring.  Does anybody know why price sets cannot be recurring?  When you select a price set for contribution amounts, the recurring option goes away.  Could this easily be changed??

Would love some feedback on this.

Steve

Recurring contribiutions for price sets have not yet been implemented. Would be great for your org to consider contributing code to make this happen. You can hire a developer / consulting firm from http://civicrm.org/professional/

thanx

There are a couple of limitations on price sets currently - you also can't use them for Early Payment discounts. I'm not sure how much work would go into changing them.

I do wonder, however, whether you would be better using a custom field attached to the contribution to choose the names? However, to do this 'properly' I guess you'd need a bit more code of some sort because really I suppose you want a child to be removed from the list once someone is sponsoring them?

How many children will be involved & how often will you be changing them?

Eileen,
This is an idea that i had not considered.
Thank you.

We plan to have about 30-40 children to choose from at any given time.
And yes, it would be nice to have children automatically removed from the list...but only after they are chosen by 3 different sponsors.
Would that require a great deal of coding to accomplish??

Hi,
I have the feeling that the more you start looking at this the bigger it will get - i.e. how do new kids get added? How will you manage adding them back in if the sponsors stop sponsoring them.

I do think there will be a bit of time that would need to go into the customisation & maintenance of the system to do that.

You could try setting it up using custom fields 'try it on for a bit' & then you might have a really clear idea of what enhancements are work spending time / money on.

Thank you for your advice Eileen.
I really appreciate it.

Can you or anybody else tell me how to make the 'contribution label' fields allow html??
