Import hanging on step 2
April 13, 2010, 12:57:15 am
I wonder if anybody out there has any tips or tricks for preventing this from happening.

I have what I believe to be a pretty basic CSV with 2000 rows of some pretty basic data.

It was originally exported as Excel from Access, then cleaned up a bit in Apple Numbers and NeoOffice.

The CSV is UTF8, comma-delimited of course, with double-quote-delimited items.

When I try to import on my local test server, all goes fairly well -- after I hit "continue" at "Match Fields (step 2 of 4)", I wait about 5 minutes, review the errors, and then the final import takes about 15 minutes.

On my production server, after I hit "continue" at "Match Fields (step 2 of 4) it takes FOREVER.  I have yet to wait long enough -- I've given up after 10 or 15 minutes.

Is there a way to NOT check for errors?  Or a way to speed that process up?  Why would this step take SO much longer in production than on my local server?

So many questions -- but I really want this to work, as I have a lot at stake here...

Thanks!

1. differences from local to production: is your production environment is a shared server? If so, that's a good example why CiviCRM on a shared server environment can be a big waste of your time. Otherwise, could be lots of issues [memory? cpu? other processes?]

2. always check in your files/CiviCRM/ directory for the import logs. If you're not even getting that, you'll need to check your apache logs for server failures.

You know what I think it might be?  It might be the fact that, under "localization", I have chosen EVERY country, and EVERY possible state within them.

I believe this slows the import considerably -- would you agree?  This would explain why the import works fine when I DO NOT include states or countries!

I had the same problem, stopping at step 2, and I also had all countries and states enabled.  In my import, I had addresses with states but no country.  CiviCRM seems to scan all available states for an abbreviation match, then apply the first available country that matches the state.  Thus, all of my users in Virginia were assigned 'Spain' because a state within Spain has 'VA' as an abbreviation.  I removed all of the countries and states from the list, then added back the ones I needed.  The problem went away.
