edit system emails

Hello,

I'm trying to find a way to edit the content of system-generated emails, i.e. event receipts, new membership entered through civicrm.

Currently, when i add a new membership, I don't have the option of unselecting: Automatically email a membership confirmation and receipt to...? the checkbox is missing, so i was hoping i could at least change the message that goes out to new members.

Please help.
