Add results of a search to a relationship
April 13, 2010, 11:24:31 am
I am trying to add 400+ individuals to a relationship. When I uploaded them I gave them all the same tag. I then did a search on that tag and they all showed up. I then chose the radio button 'All 441 records' > More Actions > Add Contacts to Organization. When I get to the next page I choose the relationship type and then enter the organization name at 'Find Target Organization'. No matter what I get the same error message:

status
Too many matching results. Please narrow your search by entering a more complete target contact name.
Even if I only choose one of the individuals I get the same result. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Is there any way to add 400+ individuals to a relationship without doing it one at a time?

Thanks.

Hi,
see my answer to your earlier post about conversion from Ebase (if I am correct in thinking it was your post :-))
Anyway, use the relationship API, but you will have to develop some code to get your source data in the correct format. Let me know if the Ebase thing was not your post, then I will tell you the links to the relevant parts of the CiviCRM wiki :-)

That was not my post  :)

So am I correct in assuming that there is a bug in there somewhere? It seems like it should be pretty straight forward...

It seemed to work on the demo site, just not on my local site  :(

I found this: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=3467.0 , not sure whether it pertains to me or not, and if it does why is it working on the demo site?

That forum post relates to searching w/in the "New Relationship" form. Your profile says your are running CiviCRM 3.0.1. If the same workflow is functioning properly on the demo then I suspect you are hitting a bug that has subsequently been fixed. We are releasing 3.1.4 shortly (should be before end of this week). I would try upgrading (a copy of) your site and seeing if that resolves things.

I thought that a msg such as
Quote
status
Too many matching results. Please narrow your search by entering a more complete target contact name.
was indicating that the search for the Organisation was finding too many results and that's why it was throwing an error - certainly has been the case when this has been cited before I believe.

FWIW, testing the 'add to Organisation' on Demo I spotted that it doesn't create a 'start date' for the Relationship - not sure if that is expected but seems like it should be happening.

I just updated to the latest version of CiviCRM and it's working fine now.

Thanks all.
