How to synchronise civiCRM Members with Drupal Users?
April 14, 2010, 03:02:30 pm
I have had a website built on Drupal6 which integrates civiCRM3.1.3; the set-up as it is allows to synchronise drupal users with civiCRM contacts.
Is there a way of synchronising civiCRM Members with Drupal Users? Allowing the option to synchronise contacts one at a time, or several together if needed.

I'd be very greatful for any help and/or advice

Thank you for the links.

We have downloaded the civiCRM Roles Sync module. So far, here how it seems to be working:
1) set up the contacts on civicrm
2) set up the username / password / email & role on drupal as they sign up
3) auto sync name & address when user logs in / out

Which seems rather repetitive in that we need to input the data both in civiCRM and Drupal Users...

Wouldn't there exist a way of synchronising civiMembers automatically with Drupal Users, therefore automatically creating a Drupal User account for each civiMember and generating password&username automatically (which could both be modified by the holder of the account)?

The organisation is membership-led, which means that only individuals who become members of the organisation can have access to the full website content.
For that purpose, individuals are not allowed to register their details online or create new drupal user accounts;
the site administrators only can create those (most of the new users, for a start, will be inividuals already featuring in my database of contacts).

The idea is to input my database of Contacts into civiCRM, then add individuals into civiMember as they become members of the organisation and create them a drupal user account to give them access to the website content.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Drupal does allow you to have approvals for user accounts - ie. you could embed a drupal user account creation form in the membership sign-up page but set it so that an administrator has to approve their drupal account before they can log on.

If the details they use to sign-up are similar to those in your civicrm database  then civicrm can automatically match them based on rules you set (e.g. same last name & e-mail & first initial)

Eileen, thank you for your post.
I am aware of that option. This is the standard way of synchronising contacts. However, I'd be looking for a way of synchronising the data the other way round -from a Member I have created in civiMember to a drupal user account... Would you have any ideas?

As a one-off -yes - use the drupal user import module. On an ongoing basis I think your end user (or admin user) should use a form that creates both at the same time

Is there a module that allows to create both a civiMember and a Drupal User at the same time?

I'm curious about this last question, also. If a person registers on the Drupal site, obviously this happens, but what about an administrator? Is there a way for an admin to do this while logged in?

You can set up membership (contribution) pages to have a profile on them that requires the end user to either be signed in or to create an account (enter a username on that form)
