how to upgrade memberships?

just say for example there are 4 membership types:
1. basic - $20
2. medium - $50
3. advanced - $100
4. full - $200

and someone signs up as a medium member and pays their $50. then half way through the year they want to upgrade to a full member. is there a way to have this person upgrade and only need to pay the remaining $150?

I dont think this is currently possible via the front end. But this would be a great addition to CiviMember. Please consider hiring a developer and/or sponsoring the core team to build this functionality
