I have yet to do anything with contact subtypes. Did not want to just start creating a soon to be out of control list of them. Any thoughts on when a number of subtypes might begin to get unwieldy? What are some of the more common uses for subtypes? I was thinking something like:

Employees
Partners
Donors
Legislative

Any thoughts on what kind of strategy I might want to consider before creating them?

I think the core thing to think about is 'are they mutually exclusive' since you can't have a contact be more than one type. So if you can see cases where a person may be both A and B then types isn't the approach. Some of what you need may be easily provided through Relationships (Employee of), Groups or Tags.
