Contact sub-types and profiles

I'm working on my first CiviCMR project.  Great tool so far.

Question: the company I'm implementing CiviCRM for is a membership organization.  They manage contacts for individuals and organizations, and the organizations are either for-profit companies or nonprofit organizations.  This distinction is very important to them as it comes into play for membership types, fees, directories, mailings, and event pricing.  The data they collect at the organizational level also differs slightly depending on which type of organization it is.

It seems that I can solve this with subtypes of organizations, creating custom data types for each.  This works for the admin area in managing data.

The problem is:

From the public side, I need to capture an individual's organization when creating a Drupal account.  If they type in a new organization name, it is automatically categorized as the top level organization contact type and I don't see a way to let them pick a subtype.  And once an organization is a particular contact type, you can't change it.

Am I missing something?

how about setting the contact subtype via a hook?

if the profile is for a specific contact subtype, i think the code should/will set it to that subtype
