Client search results navigation as dashboard element...possible?
April 20, 2010, 01:54:52 pm
First, I am new to both CiviCRM and these forums, so if what I am asking is remedial or posted in the wrong place, I apologize in advance.

I attached a screenshot below in case my post doesn't clearly convey what I am going for here, but I'll try my best to explain.

When you go to Search... > Find Contacts, it brings up a box with fields, the 1st being alphanumeric and the last 3 being drop down. Typing any characters into the alpha field yeilds the closest results in a box below with alphabet navigation boxes directly above those results (A, B, C, etc).

Now I have a bunch of 'clickers' as opposer to 'typers' (myself included) and a somewhat small contact base, and we are wondering if there is a way to set a page, or even better, a dashboard element, that would allow users to click on the alpha nav button that coresponds to the name they are looking for and have it bring up, for example,  all "S" contacts in a list that they can click the one they want out of.

It seems since the functionality is there following a typed search, it should be available exclusive from the search; however, I Googled it and searched these forums and couldn't find any reference, though it may be due to my inexperience with the program and phrasing the serch terms improperly.

Thanks in advance :)

You might want to have a look at the quick search box at upper right corner on http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/dashboard?reset=1
Typing in a string will pull down all the contacts that match the sub-string and clicking the contact will directly take you to the contact summary of the searched contact.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have looked at that and it works great for partial names; however, when you type in say... just the letter 's' it brings up the default search that I described in my OP. Then, clicking search with just 's' brings up the alphabetical navigation header with "S" selected and shows all the 's' results below it.

As I said, I have a bunch of 'clickers' who really dislike typing to the extent that they would rather click through a catalog: Shopping>Clothing>Womens>Accessories>Scarves rather than just type in 'scarf'. I know it sounds very silly, but some people are really ingrained in their ways.

The other thing I noticed is once a search query is made (like the 's' query mentioned above) all of the Alphabet headers become available (as long as they have contacts within that letter segment) so even though I searched 's' I can click the "G" header and see the 2 'g' entries or click "D" and see the 4 'd' entries... so this functionality does not appear to be search dependent per se (the interface appears to be available after running a search query, but the characters that were input in the original query, such as 's' in my example, do not exclude the ability to look up all contacts under any other heading).

Like I said, I don't know if it's possible, but it seems like it should be by the way it behaves.

Edit to add: I did find a way to force civi to go directly to the alphabet header for those who want to search manually, but it is kind of round-about. I created a new navigation menu entry called "Manual Client Search" and pathed it to <mysite>.com/civicrm/contact/search?force=1&sortByCharacter=

and it allows for the functionality I was looking for, though, not exactly in the way I envisioned it ;)

I'd still welcome any thoughts on if this could be implemented into the dash.

Thanks again!
