Formatting .pdf letters to contacts found & selected from search results
April 21, 2010, 02:42:33 pm
Experimenting with the option to print .pdf letters to selected contacts found by searching on certain criteria...

How do I format these letters, and where can I find documentation for that?

It appears that HTML tags work for line breaks and so on, and tokens are working OK, but there's no obvious way to indicate a page break, and the contacts I've selected are all running together on one .pdf sheet.

(I'm not using a WYSIWYG, for what it's worth.)

That's correct - yes.

I used br tags and so on -- I didn't try the whole tamale (html, body, etc.). Is that what I need to do?

There is an "HTML message" area above the textbox and it seems to want to be a link (i.e., when I hover just *above* the lettering or off to the left - like something is off with padding) -- but nothing happens when I click, like I've missed the "target" or something. I have been using the textbox below and didn't quite see why any HTML would be necessary at all since I hadn't been able to click "HTML message." Just finding the whole interface confusing ...

Just reporting back what I've learned from more testing. Creating a complete HTML page with HTML, HEAD, BODY tags, etc. did work for me. It was also possible to create a DIV with margins that allow room for preprinted elements of the letterhead.

The interface is confusing and IMO needs new labeling and instructions. It implies you are creating a text template and that HTML is entered elsewhere. In fact, the textbox that opens is expecting an HTML template already, or the script will not properly separate recipients into separate pages of the .pdf.

Nonetheless, this a great feature offering much convenience to an organization that needs to send thank-you letters on a regular basis.
