Date custom field not working

I can enter a custom field with the Data and Input Field Type set to "Date" successfully, but if I try to go back and edit the same custom field, an error appears which says "Please correct the following errors in the form fields below: Please enter valid - Data and Input Field Type."  Also the field sometimes displays as just "(clear)" or not at all (but it appears correctly in reports).
I am now using 3.1.4

By the way, this date field is used to record the deposit date of a contribution.  It seems to me that having the capability of recording deposit dates would be something that every organization would need (it is particularly essential for bank reconciliation), yet I found no such capability in CiviCRM.  If there is a standard feature of CiviCRM that I am missing which would facilitate entry and reporting of deposit dates I would appreciate knowing about it.

1. you can potentially do this via custom fields. Its a solution you can use now :)

2. if important to you and your org, please consider contributing code that does the needful. Should not be too hard a patch. Do ensure that your developer also patches the upgrade script. If you dont have access to programming resources, consider hiring one from http://civicrm.org/professional/

3. For the date display issue, can u check if there is the same issue on drupal.demo? You might want to try switching to the default drupal theme and checking if it works with that theme

The date works on drupal.demo but it doesn't work in my installation in any of the 6-8 themes I tried, including the default.

I'm having a similar problem where the "select date" drop down on custom fields of type date is empty.
