Add to Group not working (Joomla) from profile

I'm posting here rather than the "profiles" subsection, since that doesn't seem to be getting any replies in last two days.

Summary
When I subscribe to a newsletter, using a profile set up for this (add to group), it Doesn't send an email, but it DOES mark the person as PENDING, and does NOT add him to the group. Tested on DEMO system for Joomla.

I have a profile set up to add to group "Newsletter". I also have it setup to notify me when a submission is sent (Advanced Settings). See "Newsletter 1" Profile on Joomla demo system

When a user fills in the profile and clicks "Send", it sends me the notification email with his details.

Several things are broken
1) The notification email "Contact Summary" link is wrong. It needs to have the "/administrator" added to it before it will work. I got (in notification email):
http://joomla.demo.civicrm.org/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contact/view&reset=1&cid=108

But it needs:
http://joomla.demo.civicrm.org/administrator/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contact/view&reset=1&cid=108

2) No email notice is actually sent to subscriber. The wiki page above indicates that it will send out an email to the user (because of "Pending" status), but it does not. (I fixed the demo system to correctly send out emails)

3) It marks the person as "pending", and does NOT add him to the group. Help text when entering the profile AND documentation seems to say otherwise : http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/How+to+Create+Profiles

4) The wiki page on how to "find" pending status (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Regular+Groups) seems incorrect. It refers to things that do not exist in the Joomla pages for CiviCRM 3.1.4 and Joomla 1.5.15. There are no screen shots to deduce what might be needed, but I've tried everything visible on the referenced menu pages without success.

Thus, I cannot (on my live system NOR on the demo system) actually run a search that will find "all pending".

I need this functionality, and would appreciate any tips or working examples.
