Parent Group did not get excluded when selected for "Exclude" in CiviMail
April 26, 2010, 09:37:11 am
Hi all, just wanted to post this in case anyone had seen similar behavior.

I got tired of having to remember to click through 10 groups that we typically exclude from our mass CiviMail emails ... so I created a parent group called 'X Master Email Alert Excluded Contacts' and diligently went through my list of 10 groups and added the 'X Master Email Alert Excluded Contacts' as a parent of these 10 'children' groups.

Doing searches with the 'Include / Exclude' custom search worked just great.  All contacts who belonged to children groups were excluded when I set the search to exclude the parent group.  But when I sent my email and set the parent group to be excluded, it was not.  So all of our organizational enemies, media contacts, donors, experts, etc., received the email, when normally they shouldn't.  It was awful.

So now I am going through major hoops to find another way of creating easy mailings--but for anyone else looking at using parent groups to do something similar, I would caution against it, at least for CiviCRM 3.0.2.

Or, perhaps I did something totally stupid that someone more experienced with parent groups could chime in on ... thanks!

Can you try replicating this on demo install? If you can, please file an issue and we’ll fix it.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

Same problem applies for included groups. Replicated on 3.1.3 and demo. Filed http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-6453 .

I notice that this bug report is slated for addressing at v4.1!

For me this is a showstopper for using civicrm as we were planning to roll this out as our main comms tool for our membership. The following from the CiviCRM book is a little misleading in that case (from http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/GroupsAndTags)
Quote
Some organisations find it useful to create a hierarchy of groups. In CiviCRM, this is done by creating one or more parent groups and then assigning other groups to them. When a user sends a mailing to a parent group or searches for contacts in a parent group, all contacts in the associated child groups are automatically included.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Jon.

A couple of options:

1. Can you investigate and file a patch. We can help you out on IRC

2. If you are not a developer, would be great if your org can help sponsor a fix. That would be highly appreciated. I suspect its a 8-12 hour project (a  bit non-trivial, the queries in there are quite complex and hence the fix has been delayed)

3. we'll make a note of the bug in the book chapter shortly

Hi lobo

Thanks for the response. Could you PM me with the cost of sponsorship or point me to further info on how to go about this? It's something we might consider. I am not a dev despite a small amount of PHP knowledge (much less an SQL expert) so this could be a realistic option.

Thanks.

Jon.

Hi, In general the rate for work sponsored into core is $75USD per hour - & Lobo estimated 8-12 hours above so that gives the price. The core team charge rates are somewhere but I can't be bothered tracking them down right now but basically the $75 per hour is a cheap rate for code that helps everyone out.
