Accessing custom data via permissioned relationship

If contact a has a relationship to contact b and ..
that relationship is set to allow a to edit the data of b then

does that also extend to custom data tabs for contact b?

We only seem to be able to get this to work if we grant the "edit all contacts" permission to the users Drupal role.
But that permission is too broad for our needs.

Have I missed something?

permissioned relationships were designed for use in profiles specifically. Does not work great with "contact edit/view" screens
