Google Apps OpenID Authentication
May 03, 2010, 06:26:42 am
Hi there,

My organisation uses the free edition of Google Apps for domains in order to host mail, documents, calendars etc. for our organising team.

Google Apps now offers OpenID authentication, allowing you to use a Google Apps login to authenticate for third party websites.
http://code.google.com/googleapps/domain/sso/openid_reference_implementation.html
http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/docs/OpenID.html

What would be amazing would be to use this functionality to integrate with our installation of CiviCRM standalone, allowing organising team members to access CiviCRM using the same set of login details they use to access their mail and documents.

As far as I can tell, the request would need to be sent to
https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/site-xrds?hd=<domain> e.g.
https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/site-xrds?hd=ukycc.org

However, when I do this, I get redirected back to CiviCRM 'finishauth.php' and given a 'Unknown status returned. '  message.

Does anyone with OpenID knowledge know if there any way to get this working in CiviCRM Standalone as it currently stands? Would it be an easy feature to implement in the near future? My organisation would be prepared to consider funding and otherwise supporting it.

Thanks a lot!

Donald Lobo

1. you might want to consider switching to drupal from standalone:

2. you should check using openid as your drupal auth method
