I uploaded the civicrm-3.1.4-joomla.zip file to my JOOMLA_ROOT/tmp/ directory, unzipped, and specified the resulting directory in the "Install from Directory" field, but got the following:

Cannot open mysql://username:password@localhost:/tmp/mysql5.sock/databasename?new_link=true: DB Error: unknown error

I tried installing the civicrm-3.1.4-joomla-alt.zip file, but got the same error.

However, I do see that the components/com_civicrm directory was created, and that there's a CiviCRM menu item in the Components menu (clicking it results in a "DB_DataObject Error: DB Error: unknown error" message).

Not sure where to go from here...

I get to answer my own question.

Instead of configuring my Joomla site to access the MySQL database via localhost:/tmp/mysql5.sock (which worked fine for the initial installation of Joomla), I had to enable MySQL remote client access and specify the database location as host.domain:port
