Upgrading from 3.1.1 TO 3.1.4
May 06, 2010, 10:37:29 am
I am upgrading from 3.1.1 to the latest version (3.1.4?) Is that possible or should I upgrade in steps first?

I only have a few hours to do this. Would that be enough time? I am just trying to prepare the best I can because this upgrade must go smoothly. My client wants as little downtime as possible.

Should I delete my smart groups first?
I have several custom data groups and profiles. The forms, and all the information saved in contacts already being preserved is the number one priority. Will upgrading allow this to happen?

Also, we are upgrading because sporadically, we receive a "non recoverable error" with no other explanation when customers submit event registrations. I found others in the forum with the same problem, and for them, upgrading worked. If there is a workaround, and upgrading is not the best solution, then please let me know.

Direct upgrade is available from 2.2.x and from prior 3.1 versions (3.1.x or one of the 3.1 beta releases) to 3.1.4.

We strongly recommend that you create a copy of your existing site (directories and database) - and upgrade that copy first in order to make sure you can complete the upgrade successfully. In any case, you should create a full backup of the installed civicrm directory tree and civicrm database before beginning the upgrade process.

In general, the best way to get all the bug fixes and improvements is to upgrade.

Ok thank you for the information. I am currently trying to get a copy onto my localhost. I have created the database, etc, but it is saying my import file is too large. Perhaps I should really clean up everything before I export the tables again.

I have a lot of disabled custom data groups and profile, that we did not use to gather any information. Could I possibly just drop those tables in phpmyadmin, instead of one by one deleting them individually from the custom admin menu in Civi?

Thanks so much for the quick response!

Its recommended to delete the data, etc from the UI since all the constraints, etc are handled by the code which if done by hand in phpmyadmin may result in inconsistencies / orphaned data.

Ok thank you.

Also, should I start deleting data in any specific order? What if I do happen across a custom field that has contacts tied to it? Do option sets count? Meaning I have several custom data fields that have the same option groups assign to them, will that effect the active groups?
