Migrating to another server
May 18, 2010, 09:56:35 am
I have a Drupal/CiviCRM installation on a local machine and I want to migrate everything to an install that I just did on HostGator. What is the preferred way of doing this? If I export the database than I will get all of the server names, paths, etc. so I doubt that that is the proper way. I have about 8000 contacts, would exporting them all to a CSV file do it? Not sure what the preferred process is.

Thanks.

We have so far never been able to succesfully migrate a full site without loads of hassle....although it is probably due to our own lack of knowledge because others keep telling us it is no problem! I would therefore probably opt for converting the contacts, either with a CSV export and import, or with a PHP script using the API's if you know in what tables the data resides.

hey erik:

3.1 introduced a new script called

bin/migrate/move.php?name=XXX&pass=YYY&key=ZZZ

we've tried to put all the checks and fixes in one script. You should try that and see if it  helps you migrate with less hassles :)

Thanks Lobo, we certainly will! I will ask Erik Brouwer to execute and then duck quickly :-)

Could you explain how to use the script that you mentioned?

Code: [Select]
bin/migrate/move.php?name=XXX&pass=YYY&key=ZZZ

Not sure what the X, Y, and Z stand for or what to do once I run it...

I also just noticed that I posted this in the wrong forum, I missed the Mail part of the title, sorry guys.

Thanks

Thanks Lobo. That certainly explains the XYZ thing  :)

I'm still kinda stuck with how to use the script though. I have CiviCRM 3.1.4, is that script included with the installation? Where does it reside? Sorry if I'm being dense, I'm not a programmer.

Thanks.

One way I use to do migrations is to install a fresh copy of Drupal and CiviCRM on the new server--then the settings files are set up correctly by Drupal and CiviCRM. Then I export both databases and import into the new site. Then I just do Step 9 from here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location and that's it. Has never failed me. :)

Hi hershel, and thanks for that tip. Looks like I am not alone in suffering lots of problems when try ing to migrate an install to a different server. This approach sounds very sensible - I'll certainly give it a try next time out.

Lobo, I am very interested to learn about this migration script. Is there any documentation available on it yet?

Thanks
Graham

hey graham:

not yet documented, but i can definitely explain it to you on IRC and then you can document it for future users.

its basically a work in progress and i add various civicrm objects as i need them. Hopefully more folks will jump in and help extend them

@hershel

That worked great for me. I at first had an issue because I had not yet installed all of the same modules on the new installation that were in the old installation and after the import I was getting some error messages. However, once I installed the modules (which I will do FIRST next time) all was fine. Everything imported and all of the paths were updated when I ran the update URL in the browser.

Thanks for that tip, it made my day  :)
