cases number in contact case tab, but not being listed

A contact's case tab tells me that the contact has 2 cases, but when I click that tab, it shows "there are no case records for this contact"

checking the database, the cases exist, but for some reason, aren't being shown. Older cases are showing up, but ones we create new aren't showing up in the interface.

Has anyone seen this? Perhaps there's something I've missed in the configuration, but as far as I know (and there's only two of us with access) nothing has changed in the administration.
