Upgrade to CiviCRM 3.1.5 - Having problems with contacts

I recently upgraded to CiviCRM 3.1.5 and having problems with the Contacts.  I can search for them, but having issues assigning.   When I search and then "Record for Activity" .   I then go to the next screen and try to put in a Contact in the  "Assigned To" field and error comes ups 'Assignee Contact(s) "Smith, Joe" does not exist'.   

Any ideas or suggestions?

can you try to reproduce this on http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

can you also install firebug and check what the error is
