Can CiviMail work well without CRON job?

Do I need to manually go to the queue link to send out mails even after selecting send mails now?

I believe that setting mail to send now just sets the datetime for the mailing to now.  You still need to run the civimail script to send the mail, which I suppose you could do manually.  Do you not have access to cron?

I've recently wondered about this, too. If you can send mail without setting up a cron just by going to a specific url, why couldn't you just direct the browser to that url when "send now" is selected? Sorry for not answering the question. Just a thought. Good luck.

Why wouldn't you want to set up a cron ?

If your host provider doesn't allow you to set one up, they might/are likely to have introduced other limitations, eg. on how many mails you can sent per hour/day.

If you get a lot of bounces, that's likely that's the case, unfortunately.

Correct, on my shared hosting setup I do not have CRON support.

I also agree it would be nice for the "send now" option to just redirect you to the queue url so it would "send now".  I guess I can understand for large batches you may still need to break it up into smaller sub-batches to send out...

That's what I figured and thought I was experiencing, sounds like without a CRON job it must be manually sent... :-(

Search web crons, you will be able to find an external service that does allow you to run your cron.

This being said, I would strongly suggest you to upgrade to a better host, one that doesn't offer cron is most certainly not going to be able to handle the loads caused by mass mailing, and it will cost you much more in time trying to fix hard to identify problems that seems to pop in randomly.

When/if you have a problem with civimail and you post it in the forum, please remember to mention you are on a limited capacity hosting, it might help us pointing you in the right direction (ie. you hit a limitation set by your host provider)

I also agree it would be nice for the "send now" option to just redirect you to the queue url so it would "send now".

We had this functionality initially, but way too many people assumed that if mailing scheduled for now actually sends immediately, then ones scheduled for tomorrow also will somehow automagically work (and it’s a reasonable assumption).

The queue approach was always an un(der)documented hack and we’d rather people setup a proper cronjob than to (ab)use it.
