Charity pricing on UK Paypal
May 25, 2010, 04:06:56 pm
In this forum, folks have written about the challenge of registering for preferential pricing on PayPal UK.

My charity is too small to be registered with the Charity Commission.  However, we have a formal constitution and a simple letter to HMRC resulted a couple of weeks later with a formal response from them that we are recognised as a Charity for tax purposes.  Read how to do this here:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/guidance-notes/chapter2/chapter_2.htm

Once you've got this letter, you can contact PayPal by email and send them a copy of the HMRC letter.  In a few days, they will update your fee schedule to calculate at 1.4% of transaction value + 20 p (rather than the standard price of 3.4% + 20 p).
Contact PayPal by email at this address:
compliancedd@paypal.co.uk

Good luck - its worth doing and not difficult.

Lionel.

Thanks for this. Spurred by this, I asked them whether they could give preferential pricing for my sports club, which is not a charity but which is a Community Amateur Sport Club (CASC). This is an official status that comes with restrictions and tax breaks and you have to be registered at HMRC for it. They initially said no, but when I pushed they changed their mind and said yes.
