high bounce rate again
May 27, 2010, 10:19:36 am
I just sent a mail out to 1220 recipients and got a 65% bounce rate, all of the "Unknown bounce type: Could not parse bounce email".

Can someone at UAS diagnose this for me and tell me how to fix it?

Hi,

what version of CiviCRM are you using?  and which hosting service?

I'm hosting on my own CentOS 4 server (Apache 2.0, Phph 5.2.12, MySQL 5.0.89, using postfix for mail), using Drupal 6 / CiviCRM 3.0.4.

The account is for CPA Ontario.

Okay, i reset the on_hold and used a clever advanced search i found on the forum to resend to these recipients, and this time I got a 96% bounce, mostly unknown type, of 789 intended recipients. The mailing time was May 31st, 2010 11:32 AM (PDT).

Extra clue: I triggered this mailout from a url directly (instead of waiting for cron), and got this error:

Code: [Select]
Error Details:

Array
(
    [callback] => Array
        (
            [0] => CRM_Core_Error
            [1] => handle
        )

    [code] =>
    [message] => not connected
    [mode] => 16
    [debug_info] =>
    [type] => PEAR_Error
    [user_info] =>
    [to_string] => [pear_error: message="not connected" code=0 mode=callback callback=CRM_Core_Error::handle prefix="" info=""]
)

This makes me think there is a connection problem between my server and yours....[/code]

Also, i just did a search and discovered that the last time this happened to me (with a different client), your logs showed that they actually had gone out, it was the reporting that was wrong.

If that's the case, perhaps I should hope that the second time actually did fail?

I'm going to be looking bad in either case.

Hi,  if I remember correctly,  the last time we had this problem it was due to connection issues. and the error you pasted is most definitely due to a connection problem.

another client was having the same issues on 3.0.4 and lobo recommended that he upgrade to 3.1.4 to fix the problems.  And it worked.  Upgrading will probably help your situation as well.

Okay, thanks, I can do an upgrade.

But also last time, you were able to tell me that in spite of the apparent failures, the emails had actually been sent out. Since this was a high-value fundraising message, it's important for them to know. Can you tell me that?

hi,  are you referring to this discussion:

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,9670.0.html

what is meant there is that we were not seeing the same number of bounces as reported in your civimail due to the fact that there were connection issues between our servers.

meaning that the bounce rate in your civimail report was much higher than what we see in our logs because many of the bounces never went through our system and just got blocked immediately in your civimail installation.  not that they were sent.

If you can send the mailing id to me, I will get some info on the bounces to you later today.

Okay, thanks. I've just moved that install to my newer (Debian) server, and upgraded to 3.1.5.

I'm about to send off a new/different mailout to about 200 recipients, we'll see how that works.

What are you recommending for the batch limit?

And finally: the mailing id(s) of the two failed previous mailouts. If you mean the 'mid' value, they are 70 and 71. If you mean some other identifier, tell me what you're looking for and where i'd find it.
