Suitability of CiviCRM for our Trap-Neuter-Return Program
May 30, 2010, 10:24:52 pm
Hi,

Our NPO is an animal rights group. One of our programs is Trap-Neuter-Return, whereby we assist people who are feeding free-roaming cats with getting the cats sterilized. To this end, we lend out  humane, live animal traps to the "feeder" and book appointments for the cats' surgeries to be performed at a vet clinic. If necessary, one of our volunteers will do the trapping and transporting to/from the vet clinic. We currently have approx. 500 traps distributed across 13 trap depots, and partner with 13 vet clinics in the area that each sterilize anywhere from 10-25 cats/day for us (over 10,000 cats/yr. get sterilized through our program each year).

The information we track as part of the program includes the contact person (feeder), colony or colonies,  vet appointments and  trap assignments, clinic billing  and surgical stats,  and received donations. Unfortunately, it is currently stored in various Word or  Excel docs, so we desperately need a database.  Would  CiviCRM (and extensions) be a good fit for us? Thanks very much!

Your description doesn't give a lot of detail about what you need from the CMS - other than to be able to store data & track donations but there is certainly nothing in your description that seems to be outside what CiviCRM can offer. You will probably want to set up a contributions page, custom data fields and activity types.

Take a look at the floss manual before you go too much further

Thanks very much for the prompt response. I have been looking at the manual, just wasn't sure if resource allocation is something that  CiviCRM easily accommodates. I'll read some more... Thanks again!

I didn't pick up that resource allocation was a requirement - you are correct - that's not something that is easily accomodated. There have been various discussions about room bookings & such like but I'm not sure where they got to

Unfortunately CiviCRM does not have support for this just yet. Such a feature as you need could of course be coded as a custom Drupal module, and then you could still leverage the power of CiviCRM for all of its other features.
