Joomla vs. Drupal functionality documentation
October 22, 2007, 06:46:42 am
I can't find a centralized compilation of information to answer these questions:

What is the state of the art for choosing between Drupal and Joomla for current and near term CiviCRM implementation?
Which features are not fully implemented in Joomla?

Some relevant articles are at

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=14426
  regarding registration differences
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Configuring+Front-end+Profile+Listings+and+Forms+in+Joomla%21+Sites
regarding using Profiles

And, there are a few Community Builder plugins that seem helpful:

http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,38/func,view/catid,24/id,48517/#48517

like these that display CiviCRM info in Community Builder

But, it's still very daunting for a Joomla user to try to come up to speed...

I think that I have seen some writings that improved registration integration is waiting for Joomla 1.5, which is now at RC2.

I could help maintain a resource for Joomla users, but don't feel qualified to write one.

Thanks,
Ken

I suppose yours is a question I should be asking.  I think I read someplace that Drupal offers more flexibility, but was somewhat harder to administer - however, I certainly don't know.  Your first link might be an indication of this.

Perhaps someone that knows both could volunteer a quick comparison table?

For those of us using Drupal for CiviCRM and don't know Drupal, it would be nice to have an overall perspective in the functionality that Drupal is providing for CiviCRM.

Joomla seems much more intuitive, and obvious.  Drupal seems more powerful, but much more opaque.

I had a Web Manager tell me that she was looking for the ease of use and training of Joomla, but with the detailed access controls of Drupal.

Drupal also seems to have a much more mature multi-site functionality, and Joomla feels by my perception to be having some problems, having released 1.0.13 out of synch with their community, and 1.5 being over a year in beta.

I, personally, am being dragged into Drupal, and have just gotten past hating it, after a couple of days.

I'm interested in what others have to say on this...

Joomla
If you just need a basic site, About, Contact etc and some civicrm features like Donate page, Members page etc then I think it is great.
Drupal
Harder to learn but if you need intricate access control, custom applications, and a more complex solution overall (complex being, I think that it can grow with your needs) then it is the way to go.
Get the ProDrupal Development book so you do not waste a month or two like I did doing things the hard way.
