Modifying Display Columns in Individual Search Results?

Sorry, fairly new to CCRM, so if this is obvious forgive me.

Is it possible to modify the column order or which fields are displayed in the standard search results for Contact listings? I thought this would be a profile function, but the default profile, if such exists, for Contact listing doesn't seem to show up in the list of profiles on the custom page. I see Name and Address, and New Individual, but these seem to be the more specialized profiles, not the general listing.

Are the core listing profiles simply off-limits? Or are they hidden somewhere?

The default one does not use a profile (the profile stuff came after the default search code was written)

would be great to swap the default one to use a profile also to make things more consistent. If you can help with this feature change that would be great

Is anyone working on this?  If someone could give me a quick "how to", I'd be happy to give it a try....
