CiviMail setting up the return channel
October 23, 2007, 07:17:58 am
Setting up CiviMail, I'm following the instructions found here:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviMail+Installation

For the most, they are easy to follow. However I'm having a few problems with the 'hard part'. The AMAVIS installation instructions are a little lacking for inexperienced users.

1. Can I send mail without having the AMAVIS setup?

2. Can anyone give me a simple breakdown of how to install this on a local windows machine (assuming I don't have Perl installed either). Perhaps the Wiki can be updated with slightly more detailed instructions and prerequisites for those of us that aren't expert level.

Thanks in advance.
James.

Yes. You need amavis for processing incoming mail actions like un-, re- and subscribes etc.
But in 1.9, you can replace this with HTTP actions.

Sorry i don't have any experience on windows.

You need AMaViS (or mail2soap, also a Perl script) to handle the return channel. As Kurund mentioned, you can replace the handling of un-, re- and subscribe actions with HTTP links, but if you don’t setup AMaViS/mail2soap you’ll lack bounce handling.

I’m sorry, but we don’t have any Windows experience (we’re all Linux/Mac users here). That said, neither AMaViS nor mail2soap won’t work without Perl. Also, if you manage to get this installed on Windows, please do update the docs with instructions.
