International Address - Other field? Help!
October 23, 2007, 08:02:10 am
Hello:

I've setup an event in CiviEvent which requires registration payment.  The event will have many international registrants so I need to add a State/Province (Other) field to the Billing Address section for those who are not in the U.S. or Canada.  I can't find any way at all to add or customize the billing information section in an Event.

So, is it possible and, if so, how would I add a custom field to the registration/billing address section of CiviEvent?

Thanks,
Andrew

Think you'd have to add a custom field using the Custom Data option in the CiviCRM admin. Then you should be able to call it up in your registration form.

If you have a known set of Countries that your registrants come from, you can just have these who up in the drop-downs by adding them to Available Countries / Available State-Provinces under Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Localisation.

As an aside - you'll want to make sure that your chosen payment processor accepts credit card payments from non-US card-holders.

Dave,

And what if you don't have a completely known list of countries?  Also, what if the countries/provinces list provided by ccrm is incomplete?  Has any thought been given to making "state/province" drop down conditional depending on what country is selected?

greg:

not sure what u mean if the list provided by ccrm is incomplete. The tables are in the db, so if changes / mistakes are present in the table, users can update the relevant civicrm tables (civicrm_country, civicrm_state_province)

we had the restriction to avoid loading all the states in earlier versions. Once we've implemented the country-state widget in all forms, i suspect we will remove the restriction. this is planned for a future 2.x release

As always if this is important to you / CA, a patch to fix this in trunk will allow this to happen sooner rather than later :)

Hi,

As an aside, in a lot of countries (at least in Europe an Africa), the state/province is not something used in the addresses.
steet adress+zip code+town+country is enough.

On registration forms, the less fields the better in general, consider disabling the state/province altogether.

How can I disable the State field in the billing address?

We have folks paying/registering from non-US countries and it won't let them proceed without a state.

Thanks for your help-
Ron

what payment processor? I think paypal pro does need a state?

can u add the countries you want to the localization settings (mentioned by dave), so the state/provinces from those countries are also chosen

removing the state from the billing field is not an option in 2.1 and prior

I've been after the CiviCRM folks (hi Lobo) to incorporate an international postal module for a while.  With Drupal there is an excellent one called Addressfield that is tied into the new Drupal Commerce module that looks very promising.  I don't know if Joomla has something similar.

See  http://drupal.org/project/addressfield .

In any case, lack of international postal coding in CiviCRM has kept our international non-profit from going with CiviCRM for two years now.

Open source software also follows the mantra of "scratch your own itch". If this is important to you or your org, would be great if u'll could consider stepping up and providing the needed code / design

We have quite a few folks from outside the US using Civi. Also quite a few installs using it in multiple-countries. So not sure what is missing or what an "international postal module" will provide. perhaps you can elaborate with more specifics
