CiviMail Apache requirement
October 23, 2007, 02:34:54 pm
Is Apache 2.x a strict requirement for running CiviMail?

We are talking to our host aboot getting a dedicated box, but Apache 2 could be a problem for them (their control panel).

As I was surprised by the PHP 5 requirement for CiviMail discovered only after I couldn't find it on my CiviCRM configuration page (CiviCRM install instructions very clearly said tested on PHP 4.4.x), I want to make sure that I can give them EXACT requirements for us to be able to utilize the FULL FEATURES of CiviCRM.

Will parts of CiviCRM not work if we go with Apache 1.3?
My worst fear is that the rhythm really is going to get me.

I had no problems using CiviMail on Apache 1.3. But recently i upgraded to Apache 2.0.  For CiviMail you need to have PHP5.

Great, thank you kurund!

 :)

I have a follow-up question, a red-flag concern raised by our host: postfix. Is it possible to use sendmail instead?
My worst fear is that the rhythm really is going to get me.

I guess if you only want to send mails, sendmail will do the job..

Can postfix coexist with sendmail?

i am not sure about this. When i try to install sendmail, it prompts to remove postfix on my local machine (ubuntu)

this might help: http://www.interaktonline.com/Products/Web-Applications/MXNewsletter/Product-Forum/Details/38001/System+Configuration+for+MX-Newsletter.html

oh damn this is so heartbreaking

7 months and multiple server upgrades later and we are not even close to realizing civimail functionality  :'(

I don't know how that would help the current situation. If our host can't install postfix just for us, without affecting their other clients, than they can't. If they can, then they will figure it out.

If I have to I'll try open social sites next. My worry is that our site would run as slow as theirs.

If I have to host shop, at least now I can put together a complete list of what we need. (How many times have I already said that?  ::) )

Our host is great, going above and beyond the call to get this figured out for me. Big reason why I don't want to leave them.

It's just that I've thought each barrier, first a MySQL upgrade, then a PHP upgrade, then the PHP requirement that's greater than the rest of civcrm, then briefly the Apache question, was the last. Then we hit the postfix barrier.

It might well be the last whether it's good or bad news that I hear back.
My worst fear is that the rhythm really is going to get me.

Have you considered using the CiviSMTP service for your CiviMail delivery needs? This would allow you to avoid the whole set of Postfix/Amavis etc. install, configuration and maintenance issues.

Do I have this right, all the data and the CiviMail install still lives on your server, it's just the mail settings are your uas-smtp account settings?

That looks like a great suggestion! Emailing my host now.

Just an update, we are going with a dedicated server through our current host. They will set the box up per our exact needs, referring to Civimail documentation themselves to be sure I don't miss anything (again  ::) ).

As Amavis/Postfix is new to them, they need to create some custom monitors for our server, a one-time setup cost, +/-500 USD. I hope that this enables them to welcome future Drupal/CiviCRM clients ready-to-go. I will add them to the list of CiviCRM friendly hosts once we are up and running smoothly.

Thanks for the advice and patience.
