Making the Search Builder more User-friendly
June 08, 2010, 04:12:08 pm

I have a suggestion for making the search builder easier to use.

When I was trying to find the IDs of the select values for Contribution Status so that I could search Contribution Status = Completed, I read through this (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Search+Builder) but discovered that in order to search a multi-select NON CUSTOM DATA field, I have to know the Option Value (which is a number) associated with the label.

It's not easy to find the IDs of stuff that's not custom data.  I ended up guessing low numbers and figured it out, but are there plans to make this easier to find?

My coworker suggests adding a menu item for "All Option Groups" in the Option Lists submenu.

I have too agreed with this suggestion. Many of my users are unable to use this tool because they do not have access to the underlying DB. Everytime they try a "search build" they need to contact our technician to look at the database (Phpmyadmin) to found out what the actual "valid values" are for each of the fields nominated.

It should either use the GUI label names or at least have a look up on the page so that users can see what the valid values are.

My technician has only been involved with civi for around a year and is a little "frightened" of putting forward a patch but I think this would be a nice easy one to start this.

George, if you reading this please schedule this into your workload.

Cheers,
Roly.
