I too have this same problem! I need some guidance! I have setup cron jobs for the following:

http://www.****.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/bin/EmailProcessor.php
http://www.****.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/bin/civimail.cronjob.php

but nothing goes out!

The other problem I have is that when I send out a confirmation e-mail through the event dashboard it comes as if it was from the e-mail of the user sending confirmation but I need it to come from our no-reply e-mail address or our info@***.org e-mail address. I figured that when I set out the outgoing smtp settings to our no-reply@***.org e-mail address it would fix the problem but it did not! CiviCRM still tried to change from from address to the address of the current user and it errored out. Please advise me on how to fix this.

To recap. I need automatic confirmations sent to online event registrants.
I also need the ability to send all outgoing confirmations from one single e-mail address.
