Sudden increase in "Unknown Bounces Type"

We've been using CiviSMTP for a while with very low bounce rates (generally less than 1%) but with a recent mailing the bounces jumped to almost 13% - primarily with "Unknown bounce type: Could not parse bounce email" errors. I saw another message about this but it had no resolution and it sounded like they had a much more universal problem.

Any thoughts as to why we would be doing fine one day and not so much the next week with no changes in the mailing list or software version?

If you’re really on CiviCRM 3.1.3 (as per your profile), then please upgrade to 3.1.5 – 3.1.3 had known issues with (a) sending emails to recipients with non-US-ASCII characters in their names and/or (b) with empty recipient names; these all registered as bounces, even though they never left your CiviCRM install (because they failed (broken…) recipient validation).

The site is indeed running 3.13 and we will definitely take your suggestion under advisement, but this doesn't really address this specific issue. Here's why:

The site sent a mailing one week and got a bounce rate of under 1%. The following week sent an update to the same list and got the increased bounce rate. If this list had added new users then I can see this as the reason for the jump in bounces, but that was not the case.

Perhaps it's worth just doing the upgrade and seeing if that is the magic bullet for this problem.

Ah, in this case (the same addresses) then it shouldn’t matter.

What  needs to be checked is whether the bounces were on your end (i.e., before the emails got to CiviSMTP for sending) or on CiviSMTP’s, but I can’t help you with this (you/CiviSMTP need to check the logs).

Well, while I wait for a response from CivSMTP I found another related error.

One of our users tried to forward one of our mailings to several people using the forwarding link in the footer.. and all of them bounced with the same Unknown Bounce Type message.

BTW - I went back and read the specifics of the bug that was fixed with the newer version and then compared it to out bounce reports and discovered that this probably is the issue. This problem could easily manifest itself on a list even if it hadn't before.

It doesn't necessarily explain the forwarding problem... but it probably does.
