Notification of status change error
June 14, 2010, 12:09:58 pm
Hello all,

I'll just get right into it. I have a website where I want people to register as either an anonymous user or use their login information and register. So I could register successfully as both types of users. Then as Admin I go find participants and edit their status from "waiting approval" to "pending from approval" and I have the checkbox "Send Notification" checked so the registrants can follow the link and provide me with more information (in this case I am using a custom field set to collect travel information). However when I try to save the changes I make to the participant's status I get this error:
Code: [Select]
An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
sendmail returned error code 1

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

Your Sendmail path is incorrect.
Your Sendmail argument is incorrect.
The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.
Check this page for more information.

Event registration information for has been updated.

But I go and check my Outbound email Settings and I am able to send a test email just fine. As an aside, I thought this was an odd error because my Outbound Email Settings are configured for Sendmail, not SMTP.

The only reason I am doing event registration this way is because it is for a group of scientists and when they first register for the event I ask if they are going to need "Partial Funding Assistance", "No Funding Assistance" or "Complete Funding Assistance". Then a committee goes through the list of people and decides who gets what kind of funding.

Any help/ suggestions are much appreciated! (not just with the error but also with registrant processing)

I just wanted to add that I was doing some testing and created an event with absolutely not custom data to make sure that wasn't an issue and I get the same error.

Another update!

I was talking to HostGator support for about 2hrs and they said it must be something with the script. I also am attempting to get the SMTP settings working and I get this error when I try to send a test email.

Code: [Select]
Oops. Your SMTP settings are incorrect. No test mail has been sent.
An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
Failed to connect to mail.gleon.org:26 [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known (code: -1, response: )]

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

Your SMTP Username or Password are incorrect.
Your SMTP Server (machine) name is incorrect.
You need to use a Port other than the default port 25 in your environment.
Your SMTP server is just not responding right now (it is down for some reason).
The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.
Check this page for more information.

Does anyone know what could be the issue? The HostGator rep said I may have to reinstall CiviCRM. I'd rather not do that, however I would use it as a last resort. To be honest it's looking real nice right now.

Another update: I created a test site with only civiCRM and still get those errors. I am struggling with this so any information on a patch fix or whatever would be quite nice at this point.

might want to hire someone from http://civicrm.org/professional/ to help you figure things out. alternatively might want to try a different host

Believe me I would love to move to a different host, however this website is not the only one on our server so switching hosts would be more of a pain in the neck than anything else.

I may look into getting professional help but I originally set up the website as a sort of demo for other people. Depending on if we decide to pursue this route, professional scripting may be required.

I know this problem isn't wide spread but for those of us who have this issue I will be sure to post any information on a solution as it becomes available to me.
