One-time donation and recurring membership fee
June 15, 2010, 01:48:56 pm
We're trying to process a one-time donation and set up a recurring membership fee together through Paypal. Is this possible with CiviCRM?

I found this Paypal code that uses one day trial period to collect the first donation, and then begins the subscription the following day. This would solve our problem, but I don't know if it will work with CiviCRM.

Example:
$50 donation and a $5 monthly subscription

If there's any more information I can give, please let me know.

To do this would require some custom work on both the template page as well as the payment processor code.  It is not something CiviCRM does in its current form.

If you are skilled at PHP you could read the payment processor code and attempt to edit it yourself.  Or, depending on your budget, you could hire a company to do it.  I suggest Web Access (see the professional services page).

I found an interesting few points on the PayPal Website Payments Pro and Express Configuration page:

Quote
To take advantage of recurring and one-time contributions on the same CiviCRM Contribution page, you must have the Pro Recurring add on.
You cannot process Pro one-time donations and Standard Subscriptions from the same Contribution page.

I found another mentions of this "add-on"

Hi guys.  I am configuring PayPal Pro to use recurring on a Drupal 6/16/3.1.5 installation.  We have upgraded our account to Pro and also bought the additional Recurring add-on feature.

[...]

PS. I have updated the docs on Paypal Pro recurring which were totally lacking.  It is a work in progress:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMUPCOMING/PayPal+Website+Payments+Pro+and+Express+Configuration

I'm new to CiviCRM, and I haven't been able to figure out what piece of code he's talking about.

EDIT: Oh wow, it's you. I guess you're the perfect person to ask. Unfortunately, that probably also must mean I'm reading this incorrectly and what I was hoping it would do it not possible.

Howdy.

I'm currently working on a site with Paypal Pro + Recurring Payments.

As of June 2010, this is the situation.  Let's talk about Paypal, independently from CiviCRM.

Paypal Standard uses: one time donations (does not require a paypal account for the GIVER, but something people think it does ... and subscriptions (subscriptions require the donor have a paypal account).
Paypal Pro user: one time donations and recurring contributions (not subscriptions!)

Paypal Standard is the basic account you get for free, and when a donation is made it is full of Paypal branding and logos all over the page.

Paypal Pro costs $30/mo.  It means that none of the Paypal branding appears on the donation pages.

Paypal Pro + Recurring costs $30 + $30 = $60/mo.  This means that you get no branding and monthly contributions recurring that are not handled in the form of subscriptions, but rather an automated credit card charge.

So that's Paypal, separate from CiviCRM.

So what's this mean for CiviCRM?

You can setup either a Standard or Pro Payment processor within CiviCRM, and each Contribution page you make can use only one payment processor.

Does this help?

Yes, you've been a fantastic help. Thank you. I was under the impression Paypal Pro Recurring was some sort of Civi add-on, and was deeply confused.

I just have one more question. With PayPal Pro Recurring and CiviCRM, would we be able to create a "recurring and one-time contributions on the same CiviCRM Contribution" like the "one-time donation and set up a recurring membership fee" I asked about?

I would do some testing myself, but we're waiting on the $30 $60, and if it's not going to do what we need it to, it would be money better spent elsewhere.

I have a similar situation: my client has a fully implemented Civi 3.0.3 on Drupal 6 with Paypal Pro and very successful engagement with donors. What we'd like to add is recurring contributions, and although it seems that Paypal Std supports this, we'd like to use Paypal Pro.

From what I can tell, it should be as straightforward as signing up for the extra $30 per month with Paypal for recurring payments, checking the box in CiviCRM to allow recurring payments and going from there. Ideally, we'd like someone to go to the contribution page, donate an amount that is charged right away, then have the option of turning that into a monthly, quarterly or annual recurring contribution that Paypal just takes care of billing.

I wonder if this is supported?

It's pretty straightforward, we have simple recurring contributions working already. Go for it.
