displayed Currency for UK is £

In the  CiviCRM  » Administer CiviCRM  » Global Settings » Localization I've set the default currency to GBP. However when selecting the default currency it also shows some strange characters before the £ sign. For instance for the UK I get offered:

      GBP (£)

Many of the other currencies have similar entries.

Where does this come from? And how do I correct it to just display £?

I don't know what the solution is but the problem is Joomla and encoding :P

In drupal when the page is sent down to the browser, the encoding is set as UTF-8 which works great for all languages and i18n (u can do an info on the page to check the encoding). Check:

http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/admin/setting/localization?reset=1

In joomla when the page is sent down to the browser, the encoding is set as iso-8859-1 which messes up all the utf8 characters.

Not sure how we can programmatically change the encoding in joomla to utf8 in the header. If we can figure this out, we can do so for all civicrm pages. Henry wanna do some research on this to help out :)

thanx

Lobo, Thanks for the pointer. I know where to look now. Will research it and get back...

In the meantime i've set the Monetary Display to %C %a which displays GBP instead.
