Ok, so I've installed CivicRM on Joomla... um, now what?
June 23, 2010, 05:33:10 pm
I've just installed the software on my Joomla install, but I'm totally lost as to what to do next. I read that I'm supposed to sync the users - but there's no Sync link anywhere in the Joomla administrator area when I click on CivicRM.

And, how do I configure things like payment processors? The documentation says, go to places like "Configure » Domain Information" and "Configure » Global Settings » Outbound Email (SMTP/Sendmail)" - none of which I can find in the Joomla admin area under CiviCRM.

In the documentation, I also see notes like, "You must be logged in as a user with administer CiviCRM permission to complete these tasks. All configuration settings are accessed from the Administer CiviCRM page." I'm logged into the Joomla admin area as the superadministrator.

What the heck am I missing?

Not really; I can't find any of these actions in my Joomla administration area.

When you click on CiviCRM in the Joomla menus, do you then see a black dropdown menu near the top of your browser?

To see how it should work go to http://joomla.demo.civicrm.org/ and see the section called "Login to the Administrator Site" Once logged in, if you click on CiviCRM in the Components menu, you will then see a black menu just below the main menu with items:

Home Search... Contacts  etc.

That's how it's supposed to work.

Note that CiviCRM Book is written for CiviCRM v3.2

No... that's interesting.

So it looks like the install went wrong somehow. I used the -alt version for Joomla, unpacked it and uploaded it to the Joomla /tmp directory, and did the install from there. Could that have caused the problem somehow?

The site I'm trying to use this on is running Windows Server, PHP version 5.2.6, MySQL version 5.0.67. Could any of those be the issue?

I did get it installed in my dev box, which is running Win7, PHP 5.3.1, MySQL 5.1.41, and I can see the admin stuff there.

So, I've uninstalled the version I had installed before, and then tried to reinstall it without going through the unpack-and-upload-to-tmp process. However, all that happened was that it went back to my Joomla admin control panel. So, any idea how I can get this software installed?

I need this soon, so any help will be appreciated!

Hmm. It's known to install according to the wiki instructions. You yourself installed it on a different machine so you can even testify personally that it works. :)

I would thus conclude that there may be an issue with the server you are working with.

Unfortunately, most of us are not Windows experts (we prefer Linux or Mac) and so it may be difficult for us to help you. I myself can't really suggest anything else.

Yeah, I'm more of a Linux guy myself, but I've been working on this for someone who - at least at this point - has set up a Windows server. I think I might simply try to set up their site on my live server (the previous install was on my development box) and see if that works.
