change custom group from individual to membership

i have a custom group and after a few membership registrations ive realised ive accidently made a custom group individual instead of membership. now when i try and change it i don't have the option to.
is there a way to manually change this into the database without losing any data?

I wouldn't recommend changing this manually. I would suggest creating Individual custom data and importing existing membership values and then delete membership custom data

can i just get this straight. are you saying to:
1. re-create the custom data group and then custom fields.
2. import the current data into the new fields?

how do i do number 2? is that within civicrm or do i have to do that in the database?
